What medicines did Luke in the Bible use? And why was this allowed if the word comes from a word for sorcery?

I remember reading that our word for pharmacy and pharmaceuticals comes from the word for sorcery. So how come practicing was allowed even in those days and times before in areas with the religious authorities who were allowed to stone anyone doing almost any kind of wrong?
