Fixed gear or road bike?

I only live 3 miles from my campus, but it is hilly. Should I suck it up and quit being lazy for the vanity of having a cute trendy bike that doesn't cost a lot, or should I be practical and get a cheap (meaning bottom of the line) road bike that isn't so cute? I have an $800 credit at a local bike store, so used and online bikes are out unfortunately, but I am not limited to $800... I can pitch in another few hundred toward a bike or upgrades if needed.
