Milo and Otis movie question?

No animals are hurt in making films any more (at one time they did). I heard that no animals died. I seem to remember hearing that they had to use like 20 cats and 20 pups to make this film, since babies grow so fast. I thought it was a very cute movie, guess I missed all the terror in it.
