What dark small rodent eats at sundown?

We see these small rodents just betore dark darting from holes on our hillside in Tennessee to get bird food that I have throwen out to the birds They appear black and dart to food and dart back to holes. There are probably 50 holes within the bird feeding area. They dart so fast it is difficult to identify them.
